Who Are You Looking At?

Krista Franklin

I saw this image on the cover of Callaloo (the premier African Diaspora literary journal). I loved it and actually tracked down the artist. I can’t tell you how excited I was to find out that we were actually in the same city. I emailed her and we met at an art opening. Since then I’ve been shadowing her every move trying to get to one of her pieces. Unfortunately something always comes up and last night was no exception. Forced to study for finals I missed the opening of Krista Franklin’s current exhibition “Lucky Sevens” at Tianguis: books. Tea. Cultura. Despite my absence last night my plan is still in force. I'm sure I'll have a Krista Franklin piece before 2008.

Well I am beginning to think that being exposed to a new artist is like going shopping for nothing but finding lots of pleasant surprises in the mall. Thanks for the web link for the artists. Getting to know the artist and to view the work is have the battle of growing an audience for African American art. I am sad that some of artists are not on the web for our viewing pleasure.

You're absolutely right. Seeing an artists work is key to building an audience. Having a website is a great marketing tool. I recently purchased a piece from an artist that I read about and then found online. The internet is also a great way to find emerging artists. Some of us can't collect artists from the Harlem Renaissance and we're desperately searching for the next wave of great Black artists. When they hit the Whitney or the Studio Museum in Harlem it's too late. When I went to that collectors forum this summer at the DuSable Museum someone asked the panel if they collected emerging artists and they all said yes but no one gave us any names. It was something that made me say "Hmmmm..."
